JSC Tournament, Patterson Park
At last, a chance to flex the scrabbling muscles again after the December break. The first Tournament of the year for Gauteng Scrabblers was hosted by the Joburg Scrabble Club at Patterson Park on Saturday.
Steven Gruzd and Lawrence Obidike each recorded seven wins out of eight in the Advanced section, Steven taking the event with a superior spread of 619. Ros Fin, with five wins took third spot.
Highest Word and Game both went to Steven with 149 for CURTAILS and a game of 542 points.
In the Intermediate section Howard Rayner took seven of his eight games, and achieved an excellent overall spread of 737 to win his second tournament in a row. Good news for the rest of the intermediate players is that Howard will be moving up to Advanced, giving the rest of us a chance!
Margie Nobbs, with six wins, and Rajen Pillay, with five, filled second and third spots respectively.
In the Social category, Shirley McTaggart won all eight games, and claimed the Highest Word Score (ZINGER, 116) as well as the Highest Game Score (419) on her way to winning the event. Second and third with five wins each, were international visitors Virgilio Reyes from the Philippines and Merle Wainer from Portugal.
Thanks to the Joburg Scrabble Club and especially Lynn for a well organised and very catered event.
