Lansdowne Tourney May 2008
If the food was for a competition, Jamie Oliver was going to get a run for his kitchen. As if that was not enough, scholars came in numbers for the tournament (next time we might need the city hall). The ‘silver surfers’ came to show the youngsters how it is done and everybody was raring to go. Three sections in scholars, the intermediate and the advanced players were all in arms for the coveted Lansdowne supremacy.
Post-mortems left, right and centre were the order of the day. And the infamous noise after each round of play said it all, it’s tough down here. Sheer skill versus manna from heaven, it was not just about pure word knowledge. Intensity building game after game as divine intervention was sought from table to table. The tension could be felt after each round, as the interest in positional changes raged on. It was all not dark and gloom for the highly rated players, they continued to display their skills with words that got a few pondering and thinking…………… what the hell?
At the end of the day there can only be one winner, if no magical ties in wins and diffs brings others to the podium. Eventually, Renata Scammell took the honours in the intermediate section followed by Glenda Charles and Joan Isaacs with 6 wins out of 8 games. The march continued in the advanced where Linda Leshetz showed some of former self by coming in third, just behind the menacing Carol Parker who was on the heels of Solomon Lephoto who ran away with the Lansdowne trophy for the year 2008.
